Exempted vehicles from the highway vignette
Only electric vehicles can use the highways for free and without worries.
One of the changes this year (2024) is that only electric cars will be able to use the motorways free of charge. Their drivers will not have to buy a vignette for 2024. In previous years, hybrid cars were also exempt from the charge, but that is now over. This measure reflects efforts to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable travel. This gives electric vehicles another reason to be more widely used.
Exempted vehicles from the vignette
Another group that will be exempt from the highway vignette includes historic vehicles with a designated special registration plate and a historic vehicle certificate. This measure takes into account the cultural and historical significance of these vehicles. Vehicles transporting holders of ZTP or ZTP/P cards will also be exempt from the need for a highway vignette. Drivers of these vehicles do not need to apply for an exemption. However, during a road check, they must present documents confirming their entitlement to the exemption. If your vehicle does not fall into the category of exempt vehicles, you will need to obtain a one-day, ten-day, monthly vignette, or the traditional annual vignette.
The following cars must apply for exemption:
- Electric cars without special number plates
If you own an electric car that does not have a special number plate starting with "EL", you will need to apply for an exemption. This category was established to make it easier to identify vehicles eligible for free use of the highways.
- Vehicles powered by natural gas or biomethane
Although these types of vehicles are a greener alternative, you still need to apply for an exemption from the vignette. This rule encourages the use of alternative fuels while taking into account the different types of cleaner vehicles on the market.
- Vehicles operated by homes for people with disabilities
These vehicles, which are crucial for the mobility of people with disabilities, must also apply for exemption from the motorway toll.
